The banana
Dr. Eric Montagne May 2, 2019 Advice, Uncategorized, Why? 0This is a Cavendish banana:

Most of us simply know her as a “banana” …
… because the Cavendish variety accounts for 99% of exports.
You should know that banana sells better than any other fresh produce at the supermarket… apples, grapes, oranges!
Banana is also a staple in poor countries, alongside rice, wheat and wheat.
… which is logical:
Banana is rich in nutrients (potassium, vitamin B6, fiber and carbohydrates to give you immediate energy [2])
- It is naturally prepacked, so easy to transport
- it is likeable (kids love it)
- It costs (almost) nothing.
Un fruit exotique moins cher que nos fruits locaux !?
The oddest thing is that bananas are demanding:
- it needs a very rich soil
- To be protected from the wind
- And to receive a lot (a lot) of water
All of this makes bananas grow only in specifics areas – between latitudes of 30 ° North and 30 ° South.
It eliminates Europe, North America (except Mexico), and all of North Asia.
Il reste :
- India (1st world producer)
- South China (2nd largest producer)
- The Philippines (3rd world producer, and 2nd exporting country)
- Ecuador (4th world producer, and 1st exporting country)
- Brazil (6th world producer) [3]
That means our supermarket bananas have traveled many miles before getting here.
By comparison, the apple tree grows everywhere in our regions. Including a few kilometers from a supermarket. It adapts to different soil qualities. It resists cold winters and hot summers. And dozens of varieties of apples compete.
How is it possible that a banana that crossed the Atlantic is less expensive than an apple produced a few kilometers away.
The answer is…

The answer is … the container
The containers allowed to:
- reduce the cost of insurance
- make stealing almost impossible
- move goods easily between a boat, a train and a semi-trailer
- low labor costs
- insignificant transport costs
- predictability of shipping
Let’s go back to our banana
The life of our banana begins in a nursery.
From there, the young banana plants are shipped by cargo plane to the Dominican Republic (yes, if, and it remains profitable!).
Then they are put in the lab and in the greenhouse to make sure they are healthy.
Then they are transported to the plantations where they are replanted.
A year later, the first bananas, are picked still green … and from this moment, the countdown is launched.
Indeed, when a banana begins to ripen, it is impossible to go back. More importantly, if a single banana matures, it will ripen all nearby bananas. Hence the interest of the CONTAINER fast, predictable and cheap.
