If so, you know how they can be painful and affect your everyday life. Several reasons can cause them such as a bad sleeping position. Most of the time, the pains will resolve themselves. In some cases, however, very severe pain will persist and will be accompanied by an unusual neck position and strong discomfort during rotation. This condition is called a torticollis.
A persistent torticollis or a frequently recurring one is indicative of an underlying problem that needs to be examined. Displacement of the vertebrae in the cervical region (neck) compresses the nerves and causes symptoms that reduce your quality of life. In addition, the cervical spine contains nerves that are connected to most areas of your body.
All lesions should be treated to avoid irreversible damage to the discs and / or vertebrae and to avoid degenerative conditions such as arthritis or osteoarthritis.

Analysis of several scientific studies concludes that most cases of torticollis are the result of an imbalance in the muscle tone of the neck. Abnormal nervous output produced by cervical subluxations may also trigger prolonged muscle contractions or spasms. Chiropractic is effective in helping torticollis. A comprehensive literature of case studies demonstrates improved torticollis as a result of chiropractic adjustments to the cervical spine.
There are different types of torticollis: acute torticollis, traumatic, spasmodic and those that often affect newborns, congenital. The chiropractor is able and trained to diagnose the type of torticollis that afflicts you. An examination of the cervical problem is essential. If torticollis are caused by items outside the scope of practice of the chiropractor, the chiropractor will direct you to the most appropriate specialist for your condition.
