Sciatica is an irritation of at least one of the two important nerves of the leg. The nerve roots which emerge at the bottom of the lumbar spine to form the longest nerve in the whole body form the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is a common problem: it affects 5 to 10% of patients with back pain.
Causes of sciatica pain There are multiple causes for sciatica, here is a list:
The pains are typically intermittent on one side (unilateral), from the lumbar region (lower back) to the limb along a more or less complete path and can descend to the toes. The seating position is often painful and the pain is increased by coughing, sneezing or straining. Rest in the lying or standing position often helps. The sitting position is very often a trigger of more pain especially in a car. X-rays often show signs of injury and various tests allow the chiropractor to determine the severity of the clinical picture. Tingling, numbness and loss of sensitivity or electric shock may be present. Neurological signs are often associated: sensory and motor disturbances, impairment of reflexes. Movements are limited, an automatic position of protection against pain is put in place, the antalgic position (leaning forward and to one side).

Compression of the nerve root associated with sciatica is frequently caused by vertebral subluxation ( where the vertebrae are slightly misaligned) or sacroiliac subluxation ( where the pelvic bones are misaligned). Chiropractors correct vertebral and sacroiliac subluxations by chiropractic adjustments. The aim of these maneuvers is to realign the vertebrae and the sacroiliac bones, resulting in a decrease in the symptoms of sciatica.
The chiropractor through a review of your health history, a comprehensive and focused examination, can determine the root cause of sciatica and plan appropriate treatment.
Pain in the buttocks and / or leg (lower than the knee)If you answered yes to one or more of these symptoms, it is time to consult a chiropractor
In order to limit the risk of recurrence or relapse, vertebral hygiene must be respected: bending, lifting and sitting properly, exercising properly and regularly, the attending chiropractor can give you advices in all these areas.
