Herniated disc

Project decription

Do you have pain with numbness, tingling and muscle weakness? … Although many different causes can give you these symptoms, a disc herniation could be the cause of your problems.

The treatment goal for each patient is to help relieve pain and other associated symptoms resulting from a herniated disc. To achieve this goal, each patient’s treatment plan must be individualized.

How could chiropractic help you? :

A chiropractic treatment can, in many cases, help to limit and even eliminate the risk of damage to the disc. The vertebral subluxation complex (see FAQ: What is a vertebral subluxation or a vertebral subluxation complex?) results in wear and tear, and possible damage to the intervertebral discs.

Intervertebral discs have three functions:

1) Allow a normal motion (movement) of the spine.
2) Maintain sufficient space between the vertebrae to allow peripheral nerves to exit the spine.
3) Absorb shock on the spine.

By eliminating vertebral subluxation, chiropractic will:

1) Restore normal mechanics to the joints of the spine.
2) Restore normal spacing so as not to compress the peripheral nerves.
3) Increase the absorption capacity of the disc.
Chiropractic will thus relieve the symptoms associated with the herniated disc.

Disc herniation is a lesion, most often a consequence of an opening in the fibrous ring, characterized by the displacement of part of an intervertebral disc. Think of a donut with its center of jam that comes out and pushes its envelope. Most often the hernia occurs on the back side (postero-lateral) and, as a result, will create pressure on the nerves.

Emergency surgery is important in some rare and precise cases. If your case requires it, your chiropractor will recommend the path to follow. On the other hand, in the majority of cases a more conservative (non-surgical) approach is more appropriate, more effective and less dangerous.

The chiropractic approach to discs problems aims to restore a better positioning and a better mechanical functioning of the joint influencing in a beneficial way the herniated disc. Chiropractic will help reduce the inflammation of the vertebral spine and trigger a healing process to the damaged tissue.
